Everything you need to practice orofacial myofunctional therapy
Perspectives in Orofacial Myology (POM) is a four-day IAOM Affiliate Course designed for licensed healthcare professionals who want to integrate orofacial myofunctional therapy into their clinical practice.
The course combines evidence-based didactic instruction with extensive hands-on lab time. You'll leave with the clinical skills, assessment tools, and treatment frameworks to evaluate and treat orofacial myofunctional disorders across the lifespan.
Enrollment is limited to 20 participants to ensure individualized instruction and meaningful feedback from our expert faculty.
Learning Outcomes
Upon completion of this course, participants will be able to:
Define orofacial myology and describe its relevance to current interdisciplinary clinical practice.
Identify key anatomy and physiology of the face, oral cavity, airway, and related structures involved in orofacial function.
Explain the relationship between breathing, airway patency, oral rest posture, and craniofacial growth and development.
Recognize and evaluate signs and symptoms associated with orofacial myofunctional disorders, including airway concerns, swallowing dysfunction, speech-related findings, parafunctional habits, and ankyloglossia.
Describe typical oral-motor patterns involved in mastication, swallowing, speech production, and oral rest posture.
Explain how orofacial myofunctional disorders may influence speech, voice, swallowing, breathing, oral function, and orthodontic stability.
Demonstrate assessment procedures and therapeutic techniques used in the management of orofacial myofunctional disorders within the participant's professional scope of practice.
Apply principles of behavior modification and reinforcement to the management of parafunctional and non-nutritive sucking habits.
Develop individualized, goal-oriented treatment plans based on clinical findings, patient needs, and interdisciplinary considerations.
Identify appropriate criteria for interdisciplinary referral, case management, treatment progression, and discharge.
Apply appropriate documentation, infection-control, and clinical management principles relevant to orofacial myofunctional therapy.

This 28-hour, live, in-person course combines evidence-informed instruction with interactive and applied learning experiences. Instructional methods include:

Completion Requirements
Satisfactory Completion Requirements
All of the following requirements must be completed before leaving on the final day of the course. Partial credit is not available.
- Attend all four days of the course in their entirety, verified through daily sign-in and sign-out. Learners are required to participate in all lectures, discussions, demonstrations, hands-on activities, case discussions, and small-group learning activities.
- Complete the 15-question Orofacial Myology Post-Course Assessment with a score of 80% or higher. Unlimited attempts are permitted.
- Complete and submit the course evaluation before leaving on the final day of the course.
- All satisfactory completion requirements listed above must be completed before leaving on the final day of the course.
Partial credit is not available. The Certificate of Completion will be issued only after all requirements above have been met and verified on the final day of the course.

ASHA CEU Reporting Requirements
This course is approved for CE credits. Participants who successfully complete all course requirements and wish to earn ASHA CEUs must indicate their intent and grant OMD Courses, LLC permission to submit the required participant information to ASHA Continuing Education.

Certificate of Completion
Perspectives in Orofacial Myology is an IAOM Affiliate Course.
Participants who successfully complete the course requirements will receive a Certificate of Completion for Perspectives in Orofacial Myology.
The Certificate of Completion will be provided after completion of the course and submission of the course evaluation.
